2. Underestimating performance-based questions
PBQs (3 to 6 per exam) are interactive simulations — dragging cables to ports, labeling diagrams, reading a troubleshooting console — and they routinely take 5 to 8 minutes each, versus roughly a minute for a multiple-choice item. Candidates who only study flashcards and multiple-choice banks get genuinely surprised by how much time PBQs consume, and it throws off pacing for the rest of the exam. Practice with a lab tool (Packet Tracer or GNS3) so the interaction itself is not also a new skill on exam day.
3. Studying outdated N10-008 materials
N10-008 retired in December 2024. Cheap, older study guides and video courses still circulate widely, and they simply omit Zero Trust, SD-WAN/SASE, Wi-Fi 6/6E, and cloud networking — all explicit N10-009 objectives. Confirm every resource you use is dated 2024 or later and explicitly says N10-009. Studying the wrong version is a silent failure mode: you can feel fully prepared and still miss an entire slice of the exam.
4. Flashcarding acronyms without the pair they get confused with
CompTIA loves near-identical acronym pairs precisely because they are easy to mix up under pressure: RTO vs RPO, OSPF vs EIGRP, PEAP vs EAP-TLS, Cat6 vs Cat6a. If you study these one at a time, in isolation, you build weak discrimination between them. Study them in pairs, explicitly noting the one distinguishing fact that separates them (RTO is about time, RPO is about data; Cat6a holds 10 Gbps for the full 100 m, Cat6 does not).
5. Memorizing port numbers in isolation
Knowing "port 443 is HTTPS" is not the same as recognizing, in a troubleshooting scenario, that a blocked port 443 explains why a specific symptom is occurring. The exam tests port numbers embedded in scenarios — a firewall rule, a failed connection, a security audit — not as standalone recall. Study ports alongside the protocol's actual use case, not as a flat list to memorize.
6. Never practicing under a real 90-minute clock
90 minutes for up to 90 questions sounds generous until PBQs eat 5 to 8 minutes apiece. Candidates who only do untimed, topic-isolated practice consistently misjudge their real pace and run out of time on the last 10 to 15 questions. Do at least two full-length mocks under a strict 90-minute clock, including simulated PBQ time, before you book your real exam date.
7. Booking before hitting 78% on mocks
Because N10-009's passing score (720/900) is scaled rather than a raw percentage, a candidate scoring right at the edge on practice mocks has less margin than the number implies. Do not book your exam date the moment you first cross 70% — wait until you are consistently landing 78%+ across at least two separate full-length attempts before committing to a date.
