Cisco CCNA Study Plan 2026 — 8 Weeks to Pass

Plan assumptions

This schedule targets someone with general IT literacy and basic IP addressing knowledge, studying 1-1.5 hours per weekday including lab time (skip weekends or use them as buffer). Total time investment: roughly 60 hours across 8 weeks. If you already hold CCST Networking or have equivalent experience, you can likely compress this to 5-6 weeks — see the compressed version near the end.

Before week 1 — setup (about 1.5 hours)

Install Cisco Packet Tracer (free from Cisco Networking Academy) — you will use it in nearly every week below. Skim Cisco's official 200-301 exam topics once, start to finish, without trying to memorize it — you are just previewing the six domains and their weights. Week 1 — Network Fundamentals I (Domain 1, 20%)

Domain 1 is the conceptual and mathematical foundation everything else builds on — especially subnetting, which shows up embedded inside questions from every other domain, not just its own.

  • Days 1-2: The OSI and TCP/IP models, network device roles (router, switch, access point, firewall), and cabling/media types.

  • Day 5: IPv6 addressing fundamentals — address types, abbreviation rules, and SLAAC basics.

End-of-week target: 40-50 Domain 1 practice questions, with at least 20 pure subnetting drills solved in under 60 seconds each.

Week 2 — Network Fundamentals II + intro to Access (Domain 1 cont., start Domain 2)

  • Days 1-2: Switching concepts — MAC address tables, virtual vs physical interfaces, and interface/cable troubleshooting fundamentals.
  • Days 3-4: Wireless fundamentals — non-overlapping channels, SSID, and virtualization concepts (VRFs, virtual machines at a definitional level).
  • Day 5: First Packet Tracer lab — build a simple two-router, two-switch topology and verify connectivity with ping and show commands.

End-of-week target: 40 more Domain 1 questions, plus your first completed lab topology.

Week 3 — Network Access (Domain 2, 20%)

This is where VLANs, trunking, and spanning tree live — heavily configuration-tested.

  • Days 1-2: VLANs and trunking — access vs trunk ports, native VLAN, and 802.1Q tagging.
  • Day 3: Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) — root bridge election, port states, and why loops are dangerous.
  • Day 4: EtherChannel (LACP/PAgP) and first-hop redundancy concepts (HSRP at a definitional level).
  • Day 5: Packet Tracer lab — configure VLANs and a trunk link between two switches, verify with show vlan brief and show interfaces trunk.

End-of-week target: 50-60 Domain 2 practice questions and a second completed lab.

Weeks 4-5 — IP Connectivity (Domain 3, 25% — the biggest block)

IP Connectivity is the largest single domain, and it is where routing lives — the part of CCNA most candidates find hardest.

  • Week 4, Days 1-2: Routing fundamentals — how routers make forwarding decisions, administrative distance, and static routes (including default routes).

  • Week 5, Days 1-3: First-hop redundancy in depth (HSRP configuration) and inter-VLAN routing (router-on-a-stick vs Layer 3 switching).
  • Week 5, Days 4-5: Packet Tracer lab — build a 3-router OSPF topology, verify adjacencies with show ip ospf neighbor, and deliberately break a link to practice troubleshooting.

End-of-week target: 80-90 Domain 3 practice questions across the two weeks, plus a working multi-router OSPF lab you built yourself.

Week 6 — IP Services (Domain 4, 10%)

  • Days 1-2: NAT — static, dynamic, and PAT (NAT overload), and why each is used.
  • Day 3: DHCP and DNS operations at the level CCNA tests (relay agents, lease process).
  • Day 4: NTP, SNMP, and QoS at a conceptual level — what each does and why it matters, not deep configuration.
  • Day 5: Packet Tracer lab — configure PAT on a router to allow a private LAN to reach the internet-simulated segment.

End-of-week target: 30-40 Domain 4 practice questions.

Week 7 — Security Fundamentals + Automation (Domains 5 and 6, 15% + 10%)

  • Days 1-2: Security concepts — AAA, VPN types at a definitional level, and endpoint security fundamentals.
  • Day 3: Access Control Lists (ACLs) — standard vs extended, and where to place each for correctness and efficiency.
  • Day 4: Wireless security (WPA2/WPA3 at a conceptual level) and port security basics.
  • Day 5: Automation and programmability — REST APIs, JSON basics, and the concept of software-defined networking (SDN) and controllers. Do not skip this because it is only 10% — it is unfamiliar territory for most self-taught candidates and disproportionately easy to lose points on if never studied.

End-of-week target: 60-70 combined Domain 5 and 6 practice questions.

Week 8 — Mocks and review

  • Days 1-2: First full-length timed mock (120 minutes). Review every wrong answer's explanation, not just the ones you guessed on.
  • Day 3: Targeted drilling on your two weakest domains from the mock, plus one more Packet Tracer troubleshooting scenario.
  • Day 4: Second full-length mock.
  • Day 5: Light review only — re-read the CCNA cheat sheet, do not cram new material. If you scored 85%+ consistently, book your exam for the following week.

End-of-week target: 2 full mocks plus 30-40 targeted questions on weak areas.

A realistic daily rhythm

For each weekday session: spend the first 30-40 minutes on new material (reading or video), then 20-30 minutes on 15-20 practice questions covering that day's topic. Review every explanation — including ones you got right, since CCNA practice questions often teach a second concept in the distractor explanations.

Why lab time is non-negotiable

Unlike a foundational cloud exam, CCNA includes simulation-style questions that put you inside a simulated Cisco IOS environment. Candidates who only read about commands — without ever typing show ip route, show vlan brief, or show ip ospf neighbor themselves — consistently underperform on these items relative to their multiple-choice scores. Cisco Packet Tracer is free; there is no good reason to skip this.

How to use full-length mocks

Do not skip lab time entirely even when compressed — cut reading time first, not hands-on practice.

What if you are behind schedule

If week 6 arrives and you are behind, do not extend every remaining week proportionally — instead, protect the mock-exam days in week 8. A candidate who finishes content coverage a few days late but still gets two full mocks and real lab time in will outperform one who covers everything “on time” on paper but never practices under real time pressure. Push your exam date back by exactly as many days as you are behind, not more.
